Ensuring sustainable regeneration in fast growing Ashford

PRESS RELEASE - 30th SEPTEMBER 2009

Remade South East and Ashford's Future have this morning launched three innovative products to help construction companies ensure that the growth and regeneration of Ashford is achieved sustainably.

Ashford is one of the UK's fastest growing towns and is set to double in size by 2031 with the creation of 31,000 new homes. Ashford's Future is working with Remade South East to ensure that the£2.5billion investment programme delivers long term sustainable communities.

Remade South East has developed best practice case studies, sustainable construction product information cards and a construction waste recycling directory to help construction companies design out and recycle waste.

Andrew Kent, Project Manager at Remade South East said:, "We wanted to show how small, easy to adopt practices can be implemented by construction companies, resulting in significant and immediate environmental and financial savings, benefiting the construction companies themselves and the Ashford community."

Best practice case studies draw from the experiences of three participating construction companies - Directline Structures Ltd, GSE Group Ltd and Hillreed Homes Ltd - all of whom contributed towards diverting 1,600 tonnes away from landfill in the first year of the scheme and generating landfill tax savings of over £50,000...

Free Site Waste Management Plan Support in the South East ZeroWISE ERDF Construction

PRESS RELEASE - JULY 2009

Construction companies are being encouraged to reduce, reuse and recycle their waste through a new South East-wide initiative.

The three-year project, funded by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) and the South East England Development Agency (SEEDA), is being managed by Remade South East to support construction contractors, house builders, architects, designers and local authorities to minimise waste streams and find alternative markets for waste created from the construction industry.

The free-of-charge assistance is being provided to Small to Medium Enterprises (SMEs) to develop and implement 75 Site Waste Management Plans (SWMPs) on sites in the South East (including pre-demolition audits, groundwork assistance and construction support). The project will promote reuse opportunities by developing building material reuse centres and new end markets for waste materials. Through the project businesses and local authorities will also receive training sessions and toolbox talks to explain how SWMPs can be implemented.

The project has 17 partners providing specialist support and advice across the region including Building Research Establishment, South East Centre for the Built Environment, Remade South East, BioRegional, Centre for Remanufacture and Reuse, ConstructionResale, Tiger Enterprise, Sust Marketing, Kent Sustainable Business Partnership, Hampshire Sustainable Business Partnership, WD Environmental, Olive Consultancy, Ecosys, Gypsum Recycling, May Gurney, Brighton and Hove Council and Oxfordshire County Council.

Diana Lock, Chief Executive of Remade South East said "This project aims to deliver a range of benefits to participating businesses, such as the reduction of waste to landfill, disposal costs, carbon emissions, as well as training and development opportunities for key construction and local authority staff."

SMEs and local authorities interested in signing up to the ZeroWISE sustainable construction project should contact Andrew Kent at Remade South East for further information on 01732 876619.

Recycling not a waste of time say businesses

Local businesses are finding the benefits of going green thanks to a handy toolkit, which provides practical help and advice on recycling.

The free 'Business Recycling Toolkit' provides businesses with step by step resources to help them identify their different waste streams, find alternative routes to landfill for their waste and potentially reduce costs.

By highlighting current waste and recycling practices through using the toolkit, businesses are able to identify areas and waste streams that can be reduced or disposed of differently and by using local recycling companies the businesses may also be able to reduce costs.

Companies using the toolkit have been impressed with the results. Shaun Windle from Scotland and Bates said: “The new toolkit has given me some really good ideas on ways to make my company 'greener'.
"As a result of using the action plan I have started recycling both our office waste as well as waste arising from our operations as a Coach Company. I have become an 'environmental champion' for my company."

The toolkit contains a Business Recycling Directory, a '5 Practical Steps for Reducing Waste' guide, a Business Waste Action Planner, a Waste Audit checklist and a list of useful contacts and websites.

"This initiative is part of a project to raise awareness in waste and recycling to businesses in Ashford", explains Andrew Kent, Project Manager for Remade South East.
"The aim is to help businesses to view their waste as a resource by providing details of simple practical changes they can make in their daily business lives to improve environmental performance, gain green credentials and reduce waste disposal costs."
